The Last Hand Poker Dogs By Coolidge lidded stein #0235 Longton Crown
This pottery stein features a picture commissioned by Brown & Bigelow painted by the artist Cassius Marvellus Coolidge in 1903 named "His Station and Four Aces" and pictures dogs playing cards on a train. The train conductor makes his rounds informing the well dressed passengers (dogs) that it is time for them to disembark. Unfortunately for one of the dogs whose chip pile has become quite small, this means that he will not be able to finish the hand in which he holds four aces. His look of shock and horror is juxtaposed by another canine that has already folded quickly getting up to leave. Outside the train’s window, the station’s lights and pooches on the boarding platform can be seen.
The central picture is flanked by the raised image of two playing cards: the King and Queen, both depicted as dogs.  Raised card suits: clubs (♣), diamonds (♦), hearts (♥), and spades (♠) are echoed above and below the picture and also on the stein handle. A medallion in the bottom center says "The Last Hand".  The pewter lid also is encircled with the four suit images and has raised lettering saying" The Original Poker Dogs by Cassius Marcellius Coolidge".  The thumb rest is the head of a dog.
